The first session warm up starts at 1pm, please allow time for swimmers to be poolside in time for warm up. We have secured qualified officials to ensure that the swimmers times count should they qualify for entry to the Oxfordshire and North Buckinghamshire County Championships in February and March 2010.
CAR PARKING: Since our championships start at 1pm, the car park will not be empty and won’t be free. You may have to find parking elsewhere in Aylesbury. Please allow time to get from your car to Aqua Vale and also ensure that you’ll be able to get your car out of the car park after 8pm in the evening when the championships have finished. The following link gives info on parking costs and times www.eplanning.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/
LOCKERS: The general public will still be using the fun pools at Aqua Vale. Swimmers are advised to take coins for the lockers at Aqua Vale as in the past simply placing clothes in an unlocked locker has resulted in clothes being thrown on the floor by members of the public. DO NOT leave valuables in your locker.
FOOD & DRINK: Please bring food to keep you going poolside during the event, suggestions for what to bring can be found in the Membership Pack: http://www.thameswimmingclub.co.uk/TSC_Membership_Pack_v3.0-6-6-2009.pdf . There is a coffee area at the pool but this will not be open for the whole period of our championships.
SPECTATORS: It’s only Thame Swimming Club at this event and whilst we’ll be using the first two rows of seats as the marshalling area for the swimmers there will still be plenty of room so bring the whole family to cheer you on and raise the roof with cheers of support. Spectators can enter for £2/head including their programme.
AWARDS: Awards will be presented at the Club Presentation Night on 16th January 2010 at the Spread Eagle in Thame. Swimmers can win awards for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in each of the events for each age group – 9 & Under, 10,11,12,13,14,15,16 & Over . In addition we will be presenting the Coach’s awards for the Girl and Boy in each group (1A, 1B, 2,3 & 4) who the coach feels deserves recognition for commitment, attendance and effort during training. We will of course be presenting the Rob Brooks Trophy for the most improved swimmer and the Simon Burnett Award for the most competitive swimmer. So, see you all at Aqua Vale on Sunday 29th November!

Leighton Buzzard SC L2 Gala, Stantonbury, 15th November 2009 Thame swimmers were in action at a L2 gala in Milton Keynes this weekend. 8 swimmers from Groups 3 & 4 were competing at the Leighton Buzzard L2 meet at the Stantonbury pool in Milton Keynes. LBSC had rearranged the sessions at short notice but despite the confusion and in some cases a hasty cross country dash, all bar one swimmer made it to compete. Out of 21 swims they achieved 9 PB’s with the rest being very close to their existing PB’s. |
|
| |
|
A regional time was achieved by Girls Squad Captain, Georgia Cahill with County Times achieved by Georgia, Hannah Hawken and Imogen McCalman. Thame swimmers are gaining experience at L2 galas but still came home with medals, Imogen took 2 GOLD medals, Georgia Cahill took 2 BRONZE medals and Boys Squad Capt George Finch took 1 SILVER Medal. Thanks again to Sarah for time keeping at the event.

"The Bills” at the ESSA Boys Team Event 6th November
Thame Swimmers George Finch, Jamie Goetz, Nathaniel Armstrong, Liam Talbott and George Howlett together with our old friends Kieran Evans and Rory House from WDSC made up the boys “Bills” squad for the ESSA Boys Team Event at the Barnett Cophall pool. The squad was entered for the Junior events, covering swimmers from years 7, 8 and 9 and the Intermediate events covering years 10 and 11. The teams competed in the boys 4x50M Freestyle Relay and the 4x50M Medley Relay, putting in some great performances. The Junior teams came 7th and 8th against some very capable teams, largely made up of Year 9 students, from grammar and independent schools across the ESSA Division 10 region. Kieran Evans and Rory House, both Year 9 students at Lord Williams’s School, swam up one age group to form the intermediate squad with George Finch and Jamie Goetz, both Year 10 students. They put in good times and achieved some PBs but were facing some strong competition from some very powerful Year 11 students from the other schools. Mr Brooks did a great job sorting the teams out and driving the minibus down to Barnett.
Liam Talbott was jumping for joy at putting in a 32.16 Second 50M Freestyle on his leg of the Junior 4x50M Freestyle relay, pushing his PB down for the second time in a month. Jamie and George kept chasing each other with Jamie pushing his 50M freesyle PB below 30 seconds for the first time to 29.16 Seconds. Click here for photos.
The “Bills” girls squad will be in action on Friday 20th November for their team event.

Top Thame's Golden Dream Team
Thame Swimming Club went back to its’ roots on Saturday 17th October and celebrated being six months old in style. Thame attended the Wycombe District SC BC Meet at High Wycombe’s Handy Cross 50M pool with the largest squad of Thame swimmers so far assembled. Head Coach, David Jones said “ I analysed the swimmer’s times and thought we could get about 8 GOLD medals.” It was a long day with swimmers from Amersham, Maxwell, Hillingdon, Ruislip & Northwood and Wycombe. By the end of the first session it was clear that Thame's swimmers were in no mood to settle for just 8 GOLD medals. The first session ended with the squads total on 9 GOLD medals with several SILVER and BRONZE to boot with the best events still to come. |
|
|
| |
 |
|
|
As a 50M pool the swimmers were gaining Long Course (LC) times and compared to their previous LC times achieved 97% PBs. By the end of the event, Thame had a tally of 34 GOLD, 16 SILVER and 14 BRONZE with 4 Speeding Tickets. Girls Vice Captain, Olivia Hawkes, received the Top Club trophy from Steve Vine, WDSC Chairman. So, with Christmas coming up the club can now hope it receives a Trophy Cabinet for Christmas. Head Coach, David Jones said “ I couldn’t have asked for a better performance from the swimmers, they all put in a maximum effort and really delivered!”.
One thrilling event was the girls 100M Breast stroke. Swum in spearhead formation it had Hannah Hawken, Rebecca Smith and Amy Haarburger in lanes 2, 3 and 4 respectively. Rebecca lead the race from the start with Hannah and Amy pulling in 2nd and 3rd in a perfect spearhead. One golden family were the Briars, Emma, Cheryl and Lydia all received gold medals. The biggest haul of the day went to Boys Vice Captain, Jamie Goetz who took a total of 7 GOLD and 1 SILVER medals.
Our thanks for Susan Hewett for Time Keeping in all 3 sessions – it was a long day for the spectators so Susan must have been very tired at the end. The senior swimmers will be back in action on the 15th November for the Leighton Buzzard L2 meet. Click here for Thame Gazette article. |

Double Success for Thame Swimmers
Thame Swimmers were in action again on 3rd October. The more experienced swimmers went to Abingdon for the Sprint Meet gala whilst our newer members went to Amersham for the Novice Gala. The Abingdon Squad put in some fantastic performances.
The team achieved 26 personal best (PB) times from their 64 swims and notched up 22 County Consideration Times and 5 County Times. This meant the squad brought 4 Gold, 9 SILVER and 4 BRONZE medals back to Thame. |
 |
|
|
|
|
|
|
As well as the usual individual events, the gala included 4x50M Medley and 4x50M Freestyle relays for the boys and girls where Thame put in a great performance with both the boys and girls earning GOLD medals. The boys 4x50M Medley relay had us all on the edge of our seats as George Howlett (Backstroke) put Thame into an early lead which just got bigger as Jamie Goetz (Boys Vice Captain on Breaststroke), George Finch (Boys Captain on Butterfly) and Chris Swart extended their lead and took GOLD. Most of the parents and Dave went home hoarse after cheering the team on!
Meanwhile over at Amersham, Karen and Natasha were doing a fine job working the squad for the relays. Our boys squad was reduced to two swimmers due to some unexpected no shows which made their task even harder. The squad was made up of some of our youngest swimmers and they did a great job putting in some great swims.
Thanks to the timekeepers at these events; Elaine Brightling, Greg Smith, Sarah Todd, David Cross and Gail Cox and in particular to coach Lorna Whitehead who stepped up to being a judge at the Amersham novice gala. Well done to Tony Collins for suffering Dave, J, poolside at Abingdon and getting all the swimmers to the marshalling area on time.
Thame are in action again on 17th October for the Wycombe B/C Meet when we are hoping to bring home even more medals! Click here to see the Thame Gazette article.

Attention all Thame Swimmers who are Lord Williams’s Students!

So, if you want a chance of swimming for the school, listen out in school notices and turn up to the time trial. |

26 – 27th September 2009 MAXWELL Gala
Thame Swimmers attended this gala for the first time this year and gave the other clubs a good run for their money. This is a tough gala to qualify for with the average scratch rate being 35% this year, some clubs had 55% of their swimmers scratched. The Thame Squad consisted of Boys Captain and Vice Captain George Finch and Jamie Goetz, Imogen McCalmen, Florence Savage, Lauren Collins, Holly Revill, Eloise Littler, Amy Haarburger and Susannah Smith. Our new coach Natasha attended to support Dave for the first time. Watch out for details about Natasha on the coaches page soon. |
|
 |
|
|
|
|
|
|
There were many PBs from the squad including County and County Consideration times. George Finch gained the only Thame medals from this gala for his performances in the 100M breast stroke and 50M butterfly. Our time keepers were in action again. Sarah Todd and particularly Ros Hawkes did a fantastic job. The electronic timing and starting all failed on the first morning with the first event having to be started with a starting gun. This was particularly amusing to watch as all the spectators jumped with fright in unison as the race started.
Well done to the squad – our next out as a club is at Abingdon on 3rd October with our novice swimmers at Amersham on the same day. Timekeepers please contact Gail Cox to sign up to support these events.

Thame Swimmers Compete for “The Bills” !
The England School Swimming Association (ESSA) individual events for Division 10 were held at High Wycombe’s Handy Cross pool on 19th September. Lord Williams’s School was there for the first time with a squad of 4 swimmers. Thame Swimming Club Boys Captain & Vice Captain George Finch and Jamie Goetz with Hannah Hawken and our old friend Charlie Messenger from WDSC. The squad was up against some stiff competition as the age groups are slightly different to the ASA events we are used to. Despite swimming against older swimmers Jamie, George and Hannah managed PBs. The school, squad is known as “The Bills” as you can see from their hats. Mr Brooks was out late again supporting his students who put in some great swims in 100M Breaststroke, Butterfly, Freestyle and Backstroke. Go to the Gallery for photos. |
|
| The next ESSA events are in November (see fixtures page) and Mr Brooks will be holding a time trial for Lord Williams’s students on a Wednesday afternoon during the next 3 weeks. Listen out in school notices. Squads will be picked for the boys and girls relay events. Any Thame Swimming Club time keepers who can assist with Mr Brooks Time trial should let us know ASAP. |

MAXWELL GALA Scratchings!
This isn’t a new flavour pub snack. Maxwell SC have now sent back the entry cards and the details on scratchings for the gala on 26th-27th September 2009. Many swimmers have been scratched from one or more races and unfortunately some have been scratched altogether. This is unfortunately all part of the gala process as although the swimmers qualified against the entry times, when the organiser, in this case Maxwell SC, is over subscribed they raise the entry criteria to fit the number of swimmers to the space and time available for the events. If you have been scratched from a race(s) you will receive your refund as a credit in the next quarterly fees, January 2010.

Keep listening out in school notices for details of Lord Williams’s swimming.

Attention Thame swimmers who are Lord Williams’s Students
Mr Brooks is organising the school swimming team entry for the up-coming England School Swimming Association (ESSA) competitions. The competition dates are:
- 19th September 2009 Girls and Boys Individual Events – held at Handy Cross Pool, High Wycombe
- 6th November 2009 BOYS Team event
- 20th November 2009 GIRLS Team event
Thame Swimming Club has provided Mr Brooks with the names of swimmers who are starting in Year 7 this week, as the school Wednesday PM swimming club probably won’t have started in time for the first ESSA event on 19th September. Mr Brooks is picking the squad, so look out for school notices for an announcement about the events and the school club.

New Block Arrives!
Over the summer the new portable starting block, that we announced at the AGM in June, arrived. It’s been tested and will be increasingly used in training sessions to work on the swimmers starts. This a great step forward and we should start to see those times improving as you all get used to diving from blocks. |

5th September 2009
Attention Group 3: Competitor-Plus and Group 4: County & District Swimmers
The club now has a new cage locker located in the store area at the end of the pool. For those of you in Groups 3 & 4 who do early morning swimming, there are hooks in the locker for you to hang your wet bags on so that you don’t have to carry all your kit around school all day. The locker has a padlock and Dave will lock it up at the end of each session.
The locker is:
- NOT for your drink bottles, wet swimming costumes and towels – these will go mouldy if you don’t take them home to wash and dry them.
- NOT a pool of equipment to use if you forget your training kit. This equipment belongs to other swimmers and they need to find it where they left it.
The locker should hopefully make the early swim logistics a bit easier for all of you as you will only have your towels and costumes to carry to school. For Lord Williams’s students, particularly those new year 7’s, please remember that there is a bus pass facility to get you from the Upper Site to the Lower Site should you need it; download application form. |

Bletchley Gala
Saturday 11/07/09 saw Thame swimmers swimming in their last gala of the season, Hosted by Bletchley and District Swimming Club at the Aqua-vale pool in Aylesbury.
Overall this was the most impressive performance from Thame swimmers at a gala to date with swimmers producing 16 county times out of 60 swims. 41 new PB’s (68%), 5 Speeding Tickets, 3 Golds, 4 Silvers, 5 Bronze Medals, and 1 DQ. What is even more remarkable all this was achieved with only 14 swimmers.
Top Thame Girl Amy Haarburger,
Top Thame Boy Jamie Goetz.
Out of 14 clubs taken part Thame came 9th with 186 points.
Well Done Thame a fantastic performance see you all at training. Click here to read the full report. |

Milton Keynes League
Thame swimmers were in action again in the second round of the Milton Keynes League Division 2 on Saturday 4th July at Leighton Buzzard swimming pool. Unexpected no shows from some swimmers left others having to fill the void. Our boys squad was down to 4 swimmers who put in a titanic effort to race in all the 11 and 12 year old relay races and the individual 11 and 12 year old events. A fantastic effort and well done to Rory, Mateo, Thomas and Will who were shattered at the end of the evening. The girls squad put in some fantastic swims, leaving the competition standing in some cases. The evening culminated in the Cannon Relay where the boys and girls take it in turns to race. Our lack of a 9 year old boy meant out race did not count for points but the squad put in a fantastic performance, coming second. Well done to all, the next round will be on Saturday 12th September. If you are in the selected squad make sure you are there or you’ll be letting the coaches, club and the other members of your team down.

29th June 2009
Lord Williams’s School Sports Celebration Evening Lord Williams’s School held their annual Sports Celebration evening on Monday 29th June. The pupils from years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were all honoured for their extra curricular sporting achievement. Lord Williams’s has a swimming team for the first time in 20 years and Thame Swimming Club swimmers for the bulk of that squad with the club working in partnership with the school. Thame swimmers who received achievement certificates tonight included Cheryl Briars, Lydia Briars, Helen Malkin, Rebecca Smith, Rebecca Brightling, Hannah Hawken, Jamie Goetz and boys squad captain George Finch. In addition, our old friends Kieran Evans, Rory House and Charlie Messanger from WDSC received achievement certificates. |
The special awards were presented by Karen Pickering MBE who gave an inspiring speech about her achievements in swimming and the effort needed to return to international competition following a back injury in a car crash. A return that culminated in Gold medals at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, notably a thrilling 4x200M Freestyle relay, a very close race against the Australian team. The swimmers were able to meet Karen at the end of the event. Karen spoke of the pain and effort needed in training, to enable you to push your body beyond the limit to win. The Thame County Squad will be in the pool at 6am on 30th June, hopefully suitably inspired! |

Blocks Training Cancelled
The special block training session at the Abbey School in High Wycombe has had to be CANCELLED due to unforeseen circumstances. We had received a lower sign up rate for this session than anticipated which did not justify the cost of the pool hire. In addition, the Abbey school is currently shut to visitors due to unforeseen circumstances and we do not know whether it will be open again in time for the session. We have therefore decided to cancel the session and look to run another session in the early Autumn. In addition, those of you who attended the AGM on 28th June will know we have ordered a portable starting block which should arrive over the summer. This new block should allow Thame Swimming Club to start limited dive training at Thame pool.
As a result of the cancelation of the block training, Land Training will run as normal on 8th July at Lord Williams’s Lower School Sports Hall Conference Room. Updated Land Training calendar (pdf) |

Due to the poor turn out that week we have decided to consolidate holiday Land Training and only run it on a Tuesday at Thame Guide HQ. There will be NO half term Land Training from now on. There will be no Land Training during the club summer shut down (last swim Sunday evening 26th July - swimming starts again Sunday evening 9th August).

Thame Swimming Club have been in discussion with the council on the usage of the school busses to allow early morning training swimmers (Groups 3 & 4), who are Year 7, 8 or 9 students at Lord Williams’s School, to get to the Lower School after training. An application form can be downloaded that allows you to apply for a concessionary bus pass:
- If you already pay for a bus pass to get to Lord Williams’s School, state this on the form – there is no additional charge.
- If you receive a free bus pass to get to Lord Williams’s School, state this on the form – there is no additional charge.
- If you wish to use the bus for 1 day a week to get from Lord Williams’s Upper site to the Lower site (i.e. a Group 3 swimmer) the charge is £11/term
- If you wish to use the bus for 2 days a week to get from Lord Williams’s Upper site to the Lower site (i.e. a Group 4 swimmer) the charge is £22/term
Swimmers can apply for a pass at any time during the school year as they move up to Groups 3 & 4. However, we have been asked to recommend that swimmers apply for the passes in June 2009 to ensure they are available for the start of the September term at Lord Williams’s School.

Milton Keynes Junior League Division 2 Round 1
A great start for Thame swimmers at our first time in the Milton Keynes League. A relatively new and inexperienced team went and competed and did really well. Again for many, it was their first time going off blocks, however they all rose to the challenge and swam their very best. Well done team. A little bit of confusion at the start with Medley relays being followed by Freestyle relays and this wasn’t helped by the change in the rules that coaches weren’t allowed down by the blocks. This said we got there in the end and a great job was done by all.
My brief to the swimmers at the start was to some a bit of a shock when I said we are not here to win but to enjoy and do your very best, if anything we would probably come last, and to come 5th was indeed very respectable. Team galas like this are great for building team moral and it can be difficult when swimmers selected don’t show, and because we didn’t have a full team in certain age groups, So well done to Thomas Goetz, Harry Moore, Oliver Hawken, Dominic Hodgkiss, Imogen McCalman, and Eloise Littler who not only had to swim their own races, but had to swim up in age groups.
The object was to gain experience and to build a team spirit and improvements were made all round. Dives were much better, reaction times off the blocks improved, and the results were fantastic with 69% PB’s and with 3 new and 3 improved County Consideration times. Obtaining a County Consideration Time for the first time are Harry Moore In the 50m Free, Imogen McCalman in the 50m Breast and Rowan Read in the 50m Back. Improving on their County Consideration Times were Harriet Cross in the 50m Free, Florence Savage in the 50m Back, and Rebecca Smith in the 50m Free. Results.
Well Done Thame |

Thame Swimmers returned to Handy Cross pool in High Wycombe for the first time since the club launched to compete at the WDSC Sprint meet. The squad, being outnumbered 6:1 by the home club and with several other substantial squads at the event, could not compete for top club points but settled down to what they do best, delivering PBs and winning medals.
With only ten swimmers in the squad, 26 Personal Best times were achieved out of 27 swims. That delivered a medal hall of 3 Gold, 6 Silver and 1 Bronze. Imogen McCalman won medals despite having goggle trouble and great swims by Amy Haarburger, Harriet Cross, Phoebe Groves, Rhiannon Haywood, Rebecca Brightling, Hannah Hawken and Florence Savage. Club Captains George Finch and Georgia Cahill put in strong performances, earning medals.
The day concluded with the 50M breaststroke event for 13-14 year olds where training partners Captain George Finch earned a Gold Medal for the 14 year olds and Vice Captain Jamie Goetz won Gold for the 13 year olds. This was an electric race with Jamie and George both pushing hard. Click here for photos of the WDSC Sprint Meet. |

20th May 2009 The Minibus Service on a Monday AM, to ferry swimmers who are Lord Williams’s lower site pupils from the pool to the lower site has had to be cancelled. This is due to a lack of attendance and usage. For the remainder of the summer term parents will have to ferry their children to the lower site following the Group 3 Competitor-Plus early morning Monday swim. |

|
We have decided to simplify the land training arrangements whilst providing the swimmers with greater flexibility in available sessions. As a result:
- There will no longer be land training on a Monday evening
- Group 2, 3 & 4 swimmers may attend either the Tuesday or Wednesday sessions
- On Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th May (Half Term week) – Land Training will be at the Thame Guide HQ in Southern Road, Thame.
- Child Welfare rules require that at least one additional adult is present as well as the coach at the Land Training sessions. This means we need at least one parent to stay at the sessions for them to run. We are changing from the parent rota to a new system as the rota was proving difficult to organize.
With immediate effect can parents bringing their children to Land Training please ensure a parent is staying each session, BEFORE they leave their child. If a parent cannot stay, the session will have to be cancelled.

5th April 2009
Swimmers from the newly formed Thame Swimming Club came together on the club’s first weekend for a sponsored “Swim A Mountain” to raise money for their new club. The swimmers chose to either swim the equivalent distance in lengths of climbing the 3 highest peaks in Great Britain, (Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scarfell Pike, a total of 3407 metres or 136 lengths) or the equivalent distance of climbing Mount Everest, (8850 metres or 354 lengths). Many parents, committee members and the coaches assisted in counting the lengths. This was a great start to the new Thame Swimming Club. The swimmers can bring the funds they have raised into the club by the 26th April 2009. The full Thame Swimming Club training programme starts on Friday 17th April with the County & District Squad getting off to an early start at 6am and the other squads swimming that evening, please check the training schedule on the website for details and don’t forget the launch party on Saturday 18th April! |
